Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight so that she could have an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of that art can be an activist vehicle. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma, and later directed an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the house and examining the trash belonging to one of the juries. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in small production studios right after she graduated from school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
